Six checks on last month's statement

  1. Work out your blended rate. Total fees divided by card takings. Use the calculator. You can't judge a deal without this number.
  2. Look at business and international card rates. If those are a big share of your takings, this is often where most of the cost sits.
  3. Find the fixed monthly charges. Rental, PCI and minimum monthly fees add up, especially in quieter months.
  4. Check fees per transaction. On small sales a fixed fee can cost more than the percentage.
  5. Check your PCI status. Some providers add a monthly penalty if the yearly security form hasn't been filled in. Filling it in can remove it.
  6. Note your renewal date. Renewal quotes are often higher than new-customer offers. Diarise it and review before it rolls over.

Then talk to your provider

Ask your current provider to review your rates. It's easier with a written alternative in hand, which is exactly what my free statement check gives you.

And if that doesn't work

Switching is easier than most people think. Here's how to switch card machine provider without losing a day's takings.

QUESTIONS

Questions

Can I negotiate with my current provider?

Yes, and it's worth trying, especially at renewal. Having a written alternative makes that conversation much easier.

Should I add a surcharge for card payments?

UK rules restrict surcharging on most consumer cards, so check the current rules before you do anything. Lowering your own fees is usually the better route.

How often should I review my card fees?

Once a year, and always before a contract renews.
